What is Vertigo?
Vertigo Meaning
Interested to know what is vertigo, it’s causes and medicine? The meaning is unclear to many people. This is one of the prevalent types of dizziness or light-headedness. It can cause the patient to feel unbalanced, swaying, whirling, rotating or spinning. The patient can become disoriented as well. Additionally, they might not be able to determine the direction of motion. A strong feeling of fear may result from it. In fact, a number of disorders can be the cause. One of the common types of vertigo is BPPV. Therefore, it is a symptom rather than a disease.
Vertigo Symptoms
The most frequent indicators of vertigo are giddiness, unsteadiness, spinning, disorientation and loss of balance. They may also experience a sense of actually falling in addition to these symptoms. However, indications may vary with different people. Some might feel unsteady eye movements, skin numbness, difficulty in walking, vision and hearing issues, trouble swallowing, speech or language impairments. Plus, there could be other signs based on the root problem.
Common Causes
Three categories can be made out of the underlying causes. The first one is Peripheral Vertigo. Central vertigo is the second, while other causes are the third. Vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease and Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are a few examples of peripheral vertigo. The second condition, central vertigo is due to an issue with the brain’s regions that regulate balance. Thirdly, other causes include panic attacks, stress, tension, anxiety, fear, agoraphobia etc.
Treatments & Medicines
There is no specific medicine that can treat this condition. If vestibular migraine is the cause, lifestyle changes and medications would be the ideal treatment options. However, BPPV-related dizziness most often lowers the patients’ quality of life and consequently restricts their participation in activities. In most cases, positional techniques are adequate to manage it; medication is rarely required. Other than that, different vertigo medicine are available depending on the patient’s condition. For instance, antidepressants, vestibular suppressants, physical exercise or physical therapy and Canalith Repositioning Treatment or CRT.
